Tutorial: a blog home page

This tutorial builds a blog home page with a split highlight area: the most important post takes up half the width, two more take a quarter each. Below follows the full post list with a sidebar. You edit the home template.

Step 1 — the highlight area

The featured block promotes the three latest posts: the first as a large lead on the left half, the second and third stacked compactly on the right — each a quarter of the area. Images, titles and dates come automatically from the posts.

The block uses the three latest published posts (or the first three of the current view). Below 720px the three cards stack.

Step 2 — all posts with a sidebar

Below the highlights comes the full list. with-sidebar places it next to a sidebar with the latest posts and the categories — both fill themselves.

  heading level=2
    text: All posts
  posts excerpt=18
  sidebar sticky
    recent-posts count=4
    category-list

The highlight area and the list combined make the finished blog home page:

As soon as a new post is published, it moves into the lead of the highlight area automatically — with no change to the template.
